The Independent Community Bankers of America (ICBA) responded with a letter opposing the OCC\u2019s conditional approval of Coinbase National Trust Co., the subsidiary named in the application.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>ICBA President and CEO Rebeca Romero Rainey called the approval \u201ca grave mistake\u201d that, in the group\u2019s view, would put US consumers at risk.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The ICBA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icba.org\/w\/icba-opposes-occ-approval-of-coinbase-s-national-trust-bank-charter-application\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">letter <\/a>alleges the application contains significant shortcomings \u2014 including inadequate risk controls, unclear profitability prospects, and unresolved resolution risks \u2014 and argues that Coinbase\u2019s filing fails to satisfy requirements set by the National Bank Act and the OCC\u2019s own regulations.<\/p>\n<h2>IBCA Demands OCC Rework National Trust Bank Rule\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>The trade group warned that the influx of charter applications from non-bank entities suggests firms are seeking the benefits of a federal bank charter without being subject to the full spectrum of bank regulatory safeguards.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That, the Independent Community Bankers of America alleges, could undermine consumer protection and threaten the broader stability of the financial system.
